A group of 40 Asheville teens recently embarked on an educational excursion to Atlanta over spring break. The trip, organized by Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) in partnership with Team Us, aimed to provide the teenagers with valuable life experiences and leadership development opportunities.

Tameka Crudup, the Crump Shiloh Center Facility Manager, highlighted the significance of such educational trips, stating that they offer teens the chance to step outside their daily routines and engage with history and hands-on experiences. She mentioned that the trip was designed to help the teens envision a life beyond peer pressure and current stressors, empowering them to set and achieve their goals.

During the excursion, the teens visited various Atlanta landmarks, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, World of Coca-Cola, and the College Football Hall of Fame, among others. The itinerary also included activities like skating at Cascades Skating and attending an Atlanta Hawks game at State Farm Arena.

The impact of the trip on the Asheville teens was evident from their reflections in their daily journals. Mason Williams expressed his newfound knowledge about historical figures and the importance of the NCAA Hall of Fame. Trinnane Holloway shared insights about Coca-Cola, while Zamari Baird relished the experience of attending an NBA game for the first time.

ZayNya Greene, Clement Davidson, Kara Green, Shilah Sutton, Zi’Kara Plummer, and Jaz Cox also shared their perspectives on the trip, highlighting the diverse learnings and memorable moments they encountered during their time in Atlanta.

The educational vacation not only provided the teens with an opportunity to explore new places and cultures but also fostered personal growth and camaraderie among the participants. The trip served as a platform for the teenagers to broaden their horizons, connect with history, and build lasting memories.

Asheville Parks & Recreation continues to offer numerous programs and events for community members of all ages, with a focus on providing enriching experiences for teens. Individuals interested in exploring similar opportunities are encouraged to check out the resources provided by APR and stay updated on upcoming programs through various channels like the program guide, online search options, and social media platforms.

By facilitating such educational ventures, organizations like APR and Team Us play a vital role in shaping the youth of Asheville, equipping them with valuable experiences and skills that contribute to their personal and academic development.
